Nyamboyo Technical School (NTS) is a community-based, three-year vocational school for teens ages 14-20. We provide free vocational education in four technical fields in rural Nyamboyo Village, Kenya.
Our students come from low-income families, many of whom have lived well below the poverty line for generations. Without free education, most would be destined to continue this cycle, plagued by instability and access to opportunities.
Education in a vacuum isn’t enough. Students living in poverty need support in many areas. We offer an ever-growing menu of resources to tackle their individual hurdles, including counseling, three daily meals to combat hunger, English literacy, math skills, internships, and trade-related community service opportunities.
Our four vocational trades are electrical wiring, hairdressing, masonry & carpentry, and tailoring. We only select fields in growing industries to ensure our students have a life-long career path leading them permanently out of poverty.
During their 3 years, students rotate from classroom, to lab, to on-site jobs. They compete in regional competitions, and have local internship opportunities. Local professionals regularly volunteer in the classroom and become long-term mentors.
At the end of their 3rd year, our students sit for the national certification exam administered by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and become professionally licensed in their field.
We are proud to announce that in 2023 100% of our 3rd year students passed their NITA exam, becoming our first cohort of NTS graduates! In January 2024 these graduates will begin their professional careers working as certified carpenters, electricians, hairdressers, masons, and tailors in Nyamboyo and throughout the region.
Poverty affects every aspect of our students’ lives. They are more likely to be food insecure, to have health issues, and to have experienced a range of traumas, such as gender-based violence, teen marriage and pregnancy, human trafficking, and child employment. Some of our students began work as young as six, meaning they missed school and childhood play. Lack of access to education also means our students are more likely to lack critical skills necessary for success.
NTS is addressing each of these obstacles in our programs, paving a clear path to success.
All Nyamboyo Technical School programs are free. Students who enroll in our 3-year, professional training program never pay tuition or fees for activities, services, or materials. They receive three daily meals, school supplies, school uniforms, and menstrual products for female students.
By providing these essentials, NTS becomes a feasible option for families who rely on their children’s wages for survival. Families remain stable in the short-term, and their teen gets an education with the promise of long-term economic stability.
