Hairdressing

We are building a skilled workforce for the hair care industry.  Our students graduate as skilled hairdressers certified by the Kenyan National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).  They can perform tasks ranging from cuts to highlighting and color to wig maintenance, qualifying them to work both as employees in salons and as entrepreneurs, building their own businesses.

Hairdressing Year One

Students in Year One learn the foundational skills necessary for working professionally and safely in the hairdressing field.  Because safety for both the client and practitioner is the priority in this profession, the first year focuses on teaching and practicing correct working methods, as well as safety and health practices.

Hairdressing Year Two

In Year Two, students focus intensively on hairdressing skills including styling, hair design for both women and men, hair pieces such as wigs and extensions, and chemical treatments including color, relaxers, straighteners, and remedies for damaged hair and scalps.  Students learn to work directly with clients with minimal supervision.  In this year, students also advance their professional communication and teamwork skills, working more frequently with clients. They also further develop their business skills, learning advanced finance, product and service sales, staffing, and product and equipment stocking. By the end of the year, students require less supervision and are able to take responsibility for their work product, relying  on their own discretion and judgement.

Hairdressing Year Three

In Year Three, students master their technical hairdressing skills, with the goal of becoming highly-skilled senior hairdressers.  They work on a variety of salon teams, taking on different roles.  In addition, they learn to coordinate and oversee teams. These teams include professional hairdressers, some of whom work both with hair product companies and as independent stylists. This provides students the opportunity to build relationships with established, working professionals and with product companies.  Third-year students also mentor first and second-year students.  Also in Year Three, students may choose to specialize, developing mastery in areas including complex coloring and color correction, hair extensions, chemical reformation, scalp treatments, and make-up application.
